Beautiful Lake Sunapee
The area has been a popular vacation destination for more than a century. The name "Sunapee" is thought to be derived from a Penacook Indian word meaning "wild goose water."

The sixth largest lake in New Hampshire, Lake Sunapee is known for its crystal clear water, excellent fishing and three lighthouses, built in the1890s by the Woodsum brothers, who owned the steamships that traveled the lake at the peak of the grand hotel era. When the steamer era ended, the lighthouses were left to deteriorate.

Today the Loon Island, Burkehaven and Herrick Cove lighthouses are owned by the State and maintained by the Lake Sunapee Protection Association. LSPA installed solar powered lights in all three lighthouses in the mid-1980s. Each lighthouse has a system of lamps which turns automatically when a light burns out and brings a new bulb into place.

In addition to Mount Sunapee State Park with its 700-foot sandy beach, the 4,085-acre lake is home to marinas and cruise boats.
